Pledge the Gift of Life

Each year, the lives of thousands of people across the country are saved because someone made the choice to become an organ donor. In April, Allegheny Health Network is honored to celebrate National Donate Life Month and pay tribute to all of those who have bestowed the precious gift of life to another through organ donation. Visit AHNdonate.org to learn more and register to be an organ donor.

Local agencies are coming together to make sure moms know what they need to know to keep their new babies happy and healthy.

The fifth annual Mom's Shower, sponsored by the Alle-Kiski Medical Center, Citizens School of Nursing, Tri-City Life Center, UPMC St. Margaret New Kensington and Penn State Cooperative Extension, will be Thursday.

"The goal of the event is to provide a friendly and fun atmosphere in which to share information with women about maternity, nutrition, child care and clean air for healthy children issues," says Vickie Oles, committee member from Penn State Cooperative Extension in Greensburg, which is one of the sponsors. "We want to do something nice for moms, show them how important we think they are and give useful information in a fun atmosphere."

Almost 20 agencies, such as Women, Infants and Children, Seton Hill Child Services, ParentWISE, Valley Points Family YMCA, Alle-Kiski Women's Health, Gateway Health Plan and Destination Wellness, will have tables set up with information for pregnant mothers and mothers who have children younger than 1 year old. The moms can learn about financial services available, ways to stay healthy and other local services.

Kultar Shergill, a pediatrician with Uptown Pediatric Associates in New Kensington, will be the keynote speaker.
