Pledge the Gift of Life

Each year, the lives of thousands of people across the country are saved because someone made the choice to become an organ donor. In April, Allegheny Health Network is honored to celebrate National Donate Life Month and pay tribute to all of those who have bestowed the precious gift of life to another through organ donation. Murrysville Star: Medics honored for helping save life

Friday, May 7th, 2010

by Tom McGee

Members of Murrysville Medic One were honored by the Pittsburgh Pirates for helping save a Murrysville woman's life.

Before the April 21 games, the Pirates recognized six responders from Medic One--Jenn Edder, Brooke Lauffer, Darrick Gerano, Jerry Chellman, Steve McIlrath and Andrew Rzodiewicz--for their work saving Patty Storm in February.

Storm, 51, was at her home on Feb. 17 when she experienced sharp pains in her chest.

"When I stood up, it was like someone took a hatchet to my sternum," Storm said.

She screamed for her husband and son to call 911. After Medic One crews arrived, there's little she remembers.

Crews were called in to clear a path from the street to Storm's door to reach her. Gerano, director of Medic One, said crews worked quickly.

"We were just really aggressive with treatment," Gerano said.

Storm was transported to Forbes Hospital in Monroeville where doctors learned she had suffered aortic dissection, something that is fatal in 98 percent of patients.
