West Penn Allegheny Health System To Open New Ambulatory Care Center in Peters Township

Monday, June 14th, 2010

West Penn Allegheny Health System (WPAHS) and its affiliate Canonsburg Hospital (CGH) will soon offer the residents of southern Allegheny and Washington County access to an array of convenient clinical and surgical services at a new ambulatory care center in Peters Township. The facility will be located in the former Radicchio Complex on Gallery Drive, just off Rt. 19, and is slated for completion in the next 18 months.

In addition to accommodating the services of its employed physicians, West Penn Allegheny plans to explore joint venture agreements with private practice physicians in the region to establish the new facility’s multi-specialty ambulatory surgery center.

West Penn Allegheny expects to invest just over $14 million to develop the 55,000 square foot facility.

“As more and more patients seek healthcare services that are closer to home and medicine continues its rapid progress into the outpatient setting, it is imperative that our System evolves accordingly and invests in programs and facilities that best meet the needs of our patients and the communities we serve,” said Patrick DeMeo, MD, Chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Allegheny General Hospital (AGH).

Dr. DeMeo and other physicians from AGH’s nationally recognized Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Division of Sports Medicine, the official medical provider for the Pittsburgh Pirates baseball club, will relocate to the ambulatory care center from their existing offices at Southpointe.

According to Thomas Corkery, DO, CGH’s Chief Medical Officer, the new facility will be a valuable resource for residents of the growing Peters Township community and its surrounding neighborhoods.

“This new center will bring the exceptional programs and physicians of CGH and West Penn Allegheny closer to home for many of the patients we care for,” Dr. Corkery said.

Additional clinical services offered at the Peters Township ambulatory care center will include an urgent care center, primary care physician offices, medical and radiation oncology services, laboratory services, and advanced diagnostic imaging, such as MRI, CT, ultrasound, PET/CT and digital x-ray.

Both the West Penn Allegheny Oncology Network and West Penn Allegheny Health System Radiation Oncology Network will also establish clinics at the new facility, bringing the most advanced, integrated hematology and oncology care into the community.

“The considerable size and convenient location of this facility provides us with the ideal setting in which to create a true one center of care resource for our patients. We also believe it will be an extremely attractive practice location for physicians based in Peters Township and nearby communities,” Dr. Corkery said.

He said the goal is to build a state-of-the-art facility that enhances the overall health of the community and provides the level of outstanding, patient focused care that people have long associated with Canonsburg and West Penn Allegheny Health System.

West Penn Allegheny officials said the ambulatory care center will also bring new jobs to the community, with openings expected for various healthcare professionals, including nurses, technologists and ancillary staff.
