Pledge the Gift of Life

Each year, the lives of thousands of people across the country are saved because someone made the choice to become an organ donor. In April, Allegheny Health Network is honored to celebrate National Donate Life Month and pay tribute to all of those who have bestowed the precious gift of life to another through organ donation. KDKA-TV: West Penn Health System plans to consolidate services

Monday, June 15th, 2009

When the West Penn Hospital System merged with what was left of the old AHERF system with its anchor at Allegheny General Hospital on the North Side, it offered an important competitor to this region's giant -- UPMC.

But for six of the last 10 years, West Penn Allegheny has been losing money.

So now the North Side hospital where 1,400 babies are born each year is about to end a tradition.

The region's No. 2 healthcare provider has been under new leadership for about a year.

Faced with a loss of $26 million during the last half of 2008, West Penn Allegheny is consolidating services among its major hospitals to avoid duplication and unnecessary costs.

It's program integration, and it means moving around services currently available at Allegheny General on the North Side, Forbes Medical Center in Monroeville and West Penn Hospital in Bloomfield.

KDKA-TV has learned that Allegheny General Hospital is going to transfer its maternity, obstetrics and neonatal units over to West Penn Hospital which has some brand new facilities.
