Pledge the Gift of Life

Each year, the lives of thousands of people across the country are saved because someone made the choice to become an organ donor. In April, Allegheny Health Network is honored to celebrate National Donate Life Month and pay tribute to all of those who have bestowed the precious gift of life to another through organ donation. Visit AHNdonate.org to learn more and register to be an organ donor.

KDKA-TV: Pittsburgh hospital begins heart pump trial

Thursday, June 18th, 2009

Because hearts are in short supply, 52-year-old Robert Davis needed another option while waiting for a transplant to replace his own heart, which was failing with dead muscle.

He didn't want to miss his 14-year-old daughter growing up.

"I want to be there when she graduates, and I want to walk her down the aisle when she gets married," says Davis.

Being tired and short of breath kept him from living a normal life.

"I had to take medication for about a year. I mean it helped out some, but then I started having problems again. I took, like, 40 pills a day to stay alive."

The waiting time for a heart can be anywhere from six to 18 months. Davis' heart was so bad, he couldn't wait. He entered a clinical trial and got the experimental left ventricular heart system.

"So when they come up and said, 'Hey, this is a chance, let's go for it.'"

Once the study has 140 patients, the participants will be followed with the hope the pumps get them to transplant.

"Really it gives them a better quality of life, because they are no longer hospital bound and bedbound and housebound," Dr. Murali explains.
