Pledge the Gift of Life

Each year, the lives of thousands of people across the country are saved because someone made the choice to become an organ donor. In April, Allegheny Health Network is honored to celebrate National Donate Life Month and pay tribute to all of those who have bestowed the precious gift of life to another through organ donation. Visit AHNdonate.org to learn more and register to be an organ donor.

KDKA-TV: Teen undergoes life-changing weight loss surgery

Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009

Being a teenager is hard enough, but one local girl's decision to have gastric bypass surgery completely changed her outlook on life.

It was just three years ago at 17-years-old that Kate Wilfong, of Gibsonia, says she was literally and figuratively carrying the weight of the world on her shoulders.

At just five feet, four inches tall and 250 plus pounds, Wilfong was more than 100 pounds overweight. Then, an incident at the local ice skating rink changed everything.

"I think I was a sophomore and I went skating with a bunch of friends from school," she said. "I went to skate, but I was so heavy my ankles wouldn't hold me up anymore."

Wilfong said she called her mom to pick her up, cried the entire way home and then decided she had to make a change.

Diets and exercise weren't working so she called Dr. Daniel Gagne, the head of bariatric surgery at West Penn Hospital.

"I see that all the time, people who have just been heavy - they've already dieted, they're not having macaroni and cheese and pizza everyday, and eating fast food, they're just dieting and nothing happens," said Dr. Gagne.

Wilfong was the perfect candidate for bypass surgery when she turned 18. She was cleared by her insurance and she went under the knife reducing her stomach to a fraction of its original size.
