July Classes Offered at Destination Wellness

Natrona Heights, Pa., - The following classes are available to the public at Destination Wellness located at the Galleria at Pittsburgh Mills:

July 2011

Highmark® Personal Nutrition Coaching
This program empowers the individual to sustain healthy lifestyle changes by assisting with setting goals, better food selection and meal planning. This one-on-one counseling session is facilitated by a registered dietitian and is designed to address the nutritional changes needed to manage heart disease, diabetes, weight management and other health related issues. Sessions are by appointment only. There is no fee for Highmark members to participate in this program; a nominal fee for non-Highmark members. Call 724-274-5202 today for appointment/details.

Tuesdays, July 5 through July 26
Highmark® Eat Well For Life I SM series begins
11 a.m.
This four-week, 1 ½ hour class series will teach participants how to make better food choices that promote changes that can last a lifetime. The class reviews a variety of situations, including label reading, grocery shopping, and an actual food demo, as well as the triggers that surround food choices. There is no fee for Highmark members to participate in this program; a nominal fee for non-Highmark members. Call to register at 724-274-5202.

Thursdays, July 7 & 14
Joslin Diabetes Center’s Self Management Education two-day evening series
5 – 8 p.m.
This comprehensive program is designed for individuals with diabetes who are interested in learning how to manage their diabetes, prevent complications, eat healthfully and control blood sugar levels. There are two classes in this series that occur once for two consecutive weeks. *Participants must attend both classes. Check with your insurance carrier to determine your coverage for diabetes educational services. Call for registration, fees and details at 724-367-2400.

Saturday, July 9
Heartsaver AED/CPR
9 a.m. – 1 p.m.
This course includes adult, child and infant CPR and automated external defibrillator (AED) usage. Relief of choking in the adult, child and infant victim also included. A course completion card valid for two years will be given after skills and written testing. Fee: $35 (student manual included). Call to register at 724-274-5202. Space is limited.

BLS for Healthcare Provider CPR
2 – 7 p.m.
If you are a healthcare provider this is the class for you! It includes adult, child and infant CPR. Two-rescuer scenarios with bag valve mask, foreign body airway obstruction and automated external defibrillation (AED). Certification card - valid for two years, will be provided to participants after completion of skills and written testing. Fee: $50 (required student manual included). Heartsaver First Aid with AED/CPR
5 – 10 p.m.
The first aid course includes basic first aid, adult, child, and infant CPR and automated external defibrillator (AED) usage. A certification card given after completion of skills and written testing and is valid for two years. Fee: $45 (required student manual included). Call to register at 724-274-5202. Space is limited

HOPESM Highmark® Osteoporosis Prevention & Education series begins
6 p.m.
Develop stronger bones for a lifetime! This take-action lifestyle improvement program focuses on making healthy choices to improve bone health and prevent or manage osteoporosis. You’ll learn how to establish a comprehensive bone-building plan that includes nutrition, supplements, strength training exercises, stress management and much more. Today’s the day to take action to protect your bones! There is no fee for Highmark members to participate in this program; a nominal fee for non-Highmark members. Call to register at 724-274-5202.

1 p.m.

Prenatal Breastfeeding class
6 – 9 p.m.
This class is recommended for expectant parents who have decided to breastfeed or who are considering breastfeeding as their feeding choice. A board-certified lactation consultant will answer your questions and provide you with useful information about breastfeeding. Expectant fathers are welcome. Class fee is $35/couple. Safe Sitter® babysitting course
1 – 5:30 p.m. both days
This two-day class provides children ages 11-13 with essential skills in safe sitting and handling emergencies. Fee: $50/student. Registration required by calling 724-274-5202.

Blood Drive
4 – 8 p.m.
Donate blood and save a life. With every four blood donations, you will receive a $25 gift certificate to a local business.

Thursday, July 21
What Is Sleep Apnea? free lecture
6 p.m.
Learn the signs, symptoms and treatment options for sleep apnea by joining one of our experts, Bob Butler from the Sleep Lab at Allegheny Valley Hospital. Registration required by calling 724-274-5202.

Monday, July 25
BLS for Healthcare Provider CPR RENEWAL
5 - 8 p.m.
If you have a current course completion card for a healthcare provider CPR class in the last two years, you can take the renewal course. You must present your current card the day of class. This class covers the information in the healthcare provider class in an abbreviated format. Upon course completion, participants receive a card valid for two years. Fee: $30/student (includes required student manual). Call to register at

Alzheimer’s Support Group
7 p.m.
This monthly support group provides caregivers with valuable information when caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease.
