UPI: Soldier serves as labor coach via webcam

Monday, June 22nd, 2009

MONROEVILLE, Pa., June 18 (UPI) -- A 25-year-old Army National Guard sergeant helped with the birth of his daughter in Monroeville, Pa., despite being overseas in Iraq, his wife says.

Roxanne Allenbaugh said while her husband, Justin, is stationed in Iraq with the Pennsylvania Army National Guardsman, he was able to serve as her labor coach thanks to a Web cam, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review said Thursday.

"He kept making sure I was OK," Allenbaugh said regarding the nine-hour labor she endured before giving birth to their daughter, Gemma Rose. "He kept saying that he loved me, and he was proud of me. It didn't feel like he was that far away."

A communications department worker at Monroeville's West Penn Hospital-Forbes Campus helped set the Web cam birth up for the couple.
