Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Less-invasive breast cancer treatment as effective as underarm lymph node removal, study finds

Women with the most common type of breast cancer who undergo a less invasive technique called sentinel node resection have virtually the same survival rate as those who have all of their lymph nodes in the underarm area removed.

That's the finding in a 10-year follow-up study announced today at the American Society of Clinical Oncology meeting in Chicago by oncologists from Allegheny General Hospital and the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project.
