Pledge the Gift of Life

Each year, the lives of thousands of people across the country are saved because someone made the choice to become an organ donor. In April, Allegheny Health Network is honored to celebrate National Donate Life Month and pay tribute to all of those who have bestowed the precious gift of life to another through organ donation. Visit AHNdonate.org to learn more and register to be an organ donor.

KDKA-TV: Website warns patients about weather conditions

Tuesday, June 9th, 2009

Some people can tell when the weather is changing, because of how they feel.

"The sinus headache starts to kick in and I know it's going to be raining or humid or whatever," says one woman downtown.

"I ache 'cause I had open heart surgery three years ago, so I definitely can tell when the weather's going to change," says a man sitting nearby.

If you want to know when you'll be feeling under the weather, a web site called MediClim says it can alert you to conditions aggravating arthritis, asthma, diabetes, heart disease, and migraines.

It's the brain child of a doctor in Toronto who noticed patients would often have the same complaints on the same days.

By looking at factors like humidity, temperature, and atmospheric pressure, the site says it can predict when your joints will hurt, or when you blood sugar will go up.

It says thunderstorms with lightning can kick up mold spores, leading to asthma attacks.

It points to extreme heat and extreme cold worsening heart disease. It claims atmospheric currents can trigger migraines.

The idea is to warn you ahead of time so you can plan to avoid or adjust to the weather to keep yourself healthy.

"An excellent idea," says Dr. Deborah Gentile, an allergist at Allegheny General Hospital. "Patients can plan appropriately. That can translate to decreased asthma exacerbations and improved quality of life."
