KDKA-TV: Study: Caffeine may reverse Alzheimer's Disease

Mice, memory, and Joe: Is there a link?

University of South Florida researchers published some intriguing work in the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease Monday. Turns out, symptoms of this condition can reverse with specially brewed drinking water in mice.

"I think provocatively, and it's really the potentially exciting finding, is that the mice who are developing the signs and symptoms of Alzheimer's disease, which they would ordinarily, began to show improvements," says Dr. Kevin Kelly of the Allegheny General Hospital Neuroscience Research Center.

Mice, bred specifically to develop Alzheimer's disease, were given either plain water, or water spiked with the caffeine equivalent of six espresso shots a day.

After two months, the mice getting the caffeinated water had lower levels of the abnormal protein associated with this memory-robbing disease in their blood and in their brains. And these mice did better on memory and thinking tests.
