Local Divas Belt it Out for Pediatric Care Fund

Wednesday, July 13th, 2011

PITTSBURGH – Imagine being a parent and unable to afford a brace or prosthesis that your child needs just to function in daily life.

On Sunday afternoon, 25 local singers will compete to see who makes the best “diva” and who can raise the most money to help kids with orthopaedic problems get the medical equipment they need.

All funds raised at “Battle of the Divas” will benefit a free-care fund for kids treated in Allegheny General Hospital’s Department of Pediatric Orthopaedics. The event will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on July 17 at Mullen’s Bar and Grill on the North Shore. Tickets are available at the door for $25.

“We’re excited that what promises to be a fun and entertaining event will help children who are in desperate need of specialized health care services,” said Mark Baratz, MD, Vice Chair, Department of Orthopaedics, Allegheny General Hospital.

AGH’s pediatric orthopaedics program has provided free care for many of the region’s uninsured or underinsured children as well as for a teenage boy with a leg tumor who was rescued from Haiti following a catastrophic earthquake there in 2010.

“Our team has helped children preserve or regain mobility in the face of devastating injuries and illnesses,” said Dr. Mark Sangimino, the orthopaedic surgeon who coordinated the rescue and care of the Haitian teen. “We’re thankful for community support of these efforts which are truly life-changing for our patients.”

Battle of the Divas contestants will raise money for the fund from sponsors and perform in front of a panel of local judges/musicians, competing for a $1,000 grand prize. The evening will also feature auctions and raffles. A complimentary drink and appetizer buffet are included in the price of admission.

For more information on the event or to participate as a donor, sponsor or contestant, visit www.battledivas.com or contact Michelle Makepeace at (412) 805-6453.
