West Penn Burn Center Earns Sixth Verification from American Burn Association and American College of Surgeons

Tuesday, July 30th, 2013

Allegheny Health facility is region’s only center verified for adult and pediatric patients
PITTSBURGH – For the sixth time, West Penn Burn Center has been designated as a verified burn center by the American Burn Association (ABA) and American College of Surgeons (ACS). West Penn is the only center in the region verified for both adult and pediatric patients, and the only center in the state to be verified six times.
Verification provides a true mark of distinction for a burn center, the ABA states. It is an indicator to the government, third-party payers, patients, their families and accreditation organizations that the center provides high-quality burn care from the time of injury through rehabilitation.
To achieve verification, a burn center must meet rigorous standards for organizational structure, personnel qualifications, facilities resources, and medical care services, the ABA states. Burn centers are verified for a three-year period.
The “Re-verification Report” by site surveyors from the American Burn Association/American College of Surgeons Verification Review Committees’ Burn Center Verification Program for Hospitals found no criterion deficiencies and praised West Penn for:
• Strong tradition of burn care at the hospital
• Excellent leadership by Medical Director Ariel Aballay, MD, FACS
• A team that participates well together
• Very strong nursing leadership
• Strong teaching program
• Excellent outreach program using simulation
• Excellent “Burn Concern” peer support program
• Excellent Pharmacy support
• Clear administrative support
• Superb outreach and marketing program
• Admirable 27 years of pediatric burn camp
• Excellent affiliation with West Virginia University in providing child psychology support, including research
West Penn Burn Center, founded in 1969, is located at West Penn Hospital, part of the Allegheny Health Network.
