Pledge the Gift of Life

Each year, the lives of thousands of people across the country are saved because someone made the choice to become an organ donor. In April, Allegheny Health Network is honored to celebrate National Donate Life Month and pay tribute to all of those who have bestowed the precious gift of life to another through organ donation. Visit AHNdonate.org to learn more and register to be an organ donor.

KDKA-TV: First responders from LA Fitness shooting explain emergency treatment

Tuesday, August 11th, 2009

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ? Pagers on Tuesday night were buzzing as emergency staff at Pittsburgh area hospitals were notified of mass casualties.

"They put a call out to bring back all off staff personnel to overstaff our units," Dan Janowski, from Ross Township EMS, said.

"We were told that we were going to receive 10 or 15 patients from a gun shot wound incident," said Dr. Aurelio Rodriguez, a trauma surgeon at Allegheny General Hospital, said. "Normally a gun shot wound you get one or two, not 15 or 10."

"When you have four that come back to back that are gun shot wounds, you know something is up," Tom Gronow, director of the emergency department at UPMC Mercy, said.

A medical command center sorts out who goes where.
