Pledge the Gift of Life

Each year, the lives of thousands of people across the country are saved because someone made the choice to become an organ donor. In April, Allegheny Health Network is honored to celebrate National Donate Life Month and pay tribute to all of those who have bestowed the precious gift of life to another through organ donation. Visit AHNdonate.org to learn more and register to be an organ donor.

AGH Nephrology Fellows Rank Highest in National Exam

Monday, August 17th, 2009

Allegheny General Hospital’s Nephrology Fellowship Program is ranked first in the nation based on its recent performance in the American Society of Nephrology’s In-Training Exam.

An Internet-based test administered by the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME), the In-Training Exam evaluates a fellow’s knowledge of kidney related conditions and closely mimics the American Board of Internal Medicine’s initial certifying exam in nephrology. The results of the exam allow nephrology training program directors to compare their fellow’s performance among peers internally as well as to that of nephrology fellows at peer institutions across the country.

According to Richard Marcus, MD, Director of AGH’s Nephrology Fellowship Program, the two-year fellowship program is designed to prepare physicians for a career in clinical nephrology. Specific areas of training include consultative nephrology, inpatient and outpatient dialysis and related renal replacement therapies, hypertension, and transplant nephrology.

“I am very pleased with our fellows’ performance,” said Dr. Marcus. “It affirms the fact that the program continues to attract the finest physicians in the country wishing to pursue a career in nephrology.”
