Pledge the Gift of Life

Each year, the lives of thousands of people across the country are saved because someone made the choice to become an organ donor. In April, Allegheny Health Network is honored to celebrate National Donate Life Month and pay tribute to all of those who have bestowed the precious gift of life to another through organ donation. Visit AHNdonate.org to learn more and register to be an organ donor.

WPXI-TV: Study: Most people need more than 6 hours of sleep

Monday, August 17th, 2009

Results of a new study showed that more than six hours of sleep at night is needed for most people to fully rejuvenate themselves.

The study, conducted at the sleep laboratory at Allegheny General Hospital, said only a select few individuals can manage with six hours or less.

“It's interesting; there appears to be a small group of patients that don't require much sleep,” said Dr. Mark Itskowitz of Allegheny General Hospital. “They have a genetic mutation where they get a high quality of sleep."

Most people require more than six hours, though.

“People are misleading themselves. They walk around sleep deprived and their performance at work is probably suffering,” Itskowitz said. “They are losing some short term memory.”
