Leading Neuromuscular and Electrodiagnostic Medicine Group Awards Region’s Only Accreditation to West Penn Hospital Lab

Friday, August 17th, 2012

PITTSBURGH – West Penn Hospital’s Neurodiagnostic Lab has received laboratory accreditation status for EMG/NCV‘s from the American Association of Neuromuscular & Electrodiagnostic Medicine (AANEM). It is Pittsburgh’s only accredited EMG/NCV lab, one of only four in the state and 108 nationwide.
The Neurodiagnostic Laboratory is under the medical direction of H. Ronald Berk, MD, FACP, FAAN, along with associate director Benjamin Smolar, MD, and is staffed by registered technologists. The lab is located in West Penn’s Mellon Pavilion, offers diagnosis of a variety of muscle and nerve disorders such as carpal tunnel syndrome, other peripheral neuropathies, as well as other nerve and muscle conditions.
“With this accreditation, our patients know that we meet the highest standards of testing, as judged by the leading EMG society in the United States,” Dr. Berk said.
The AANEM developed the Electrodiagnostic Laboratory Accreditation Program as a voluntary, peer review process that identifies and acknowledges electrodiagnostic laboratories for achieving and maintaining the highest level of quality, performance, and integrity based on professional standards.
Accreditation provides laboratories specializing in electrodiagnostic medicine with a structured mechanism to assess, evaluate, and improve the quality of care provided to their patients.
The American Association of Neuromuscular & Electrodiagnostic Medicine (AANEM) is a nonprofit membership association dedicated to the advancement of neuromuscular, musculoskeletal, and electrodiagnostic medicine.
The AANEM’s mission is to improve the quality of patient care and advance the science of neuromuscular and musculoskeletal diseases by serving physicians and allied health professionals who care for those with muscle and nerve disorders
