Pledge the Gift of Life

Each year, the lives of thousands of people across the country are saved because someone made the choice to become an organ donor. In April, Allegheny Health Network is honored to celebrate National Donate Life Month and pay tribute to all of those who have bestowed the precious gift of life to another through organ donation. Visit AHNdonate.org to learn more and register to be an organ donor.

KDKA-TV: Few Cut Back Pollution On Air Quality Days

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) When public health officials declare an Air Quality Action Day, it turns out few people do their part to reduce pollution.

On the roof of the Allegheny County Health Department in Lawrenceville, monitors help determine air quality.

"The ozone layer in our upper atmosphere actually helps protect us from ultraviolet radiation," Darrell Stern, air quality manager, said. "But ozone on the ground is not a good thing."

On hot and humid days, people with respiratory conditions need to be careful.

"On days like today, we really want anyone with respiratory problems - such as asthma or COPD - to really be careful," said Dr. Moira Davenport, an emergency room doctor at Allegheny General Hospital.

"We do recommend that people get enough exercise, but to try and to it in the middle of the day, when the humidity is highest, may not be a good idea," she said.

To help cut back on pollution, health experts say you should drive less and reduce your electricity use which will reduce emissions from power plants.

Wait until dusk to mow your lawn and fill your gas tank.
