Pledge the Gift of Life

Each year, the lives of thousands of people across the country are saved because someone made the choice to become an organ donor. In April, Allegheny Health Network is honored to celebrate National Donate Life Month and pay tribute to all of those who have bestowed the precious gift of life to another through organ donation. Visit AHNdonate.org to learn more and register to be an organ donor.

WPXI-TV: Ozone Action Day Poses Health Risks

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

When public health officials declare an Air Quality Action Day, it turns out few people do their part to reduce pollution.

On the roof of the Allegheny County Health Department in Lawrenceville, monitors help determine air quality.

"The ozone layer in our upper atmosphere actually helps protect us from ultraviolet radiation," Darrell Stern, air quality manager, said. "But ozone on the ground is not a good thing."

On hot and humid days, people with respiratory conditions need to be careful.

WPXI talked with a doctor at West Penn Hospital today.

"When it gest this hot out your body loses some of its natural cooling ability because the humidity will not allow sweat to evaporate as fast.  So its important for people to use their heads and only go out if necessary and ideally during the coolest times of the day - morning and evening," said Dr. Thomas Campbell, chairman of emergency medicine at West Penn.

To help cut back on pollution, health experts say you should drive less and reduce your electricity use which will reduce emissions from power plants.
