AGH Breast Surgeon Thomas Julian, MD, Honored as Outstanding Researcher By PA Breast Cancer Coalition

PITTSBURGH – The Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition has named Allegheny General Hospital (AGH) breast surgeon Thomas Julian, MD, recipient of the 2010 Vivian and Meyer P. Potamkin Foundation Award for Breast Cancer Research, given to an outstanding leader of the breast cancer research community.

Dr. Julian, Associate Director of the Allegheny Breast Center, Associate Professor of Human Oncology at Drexel University College of Medicine, and Associate Director of Medical Affairs at the AGH-based National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project (NSABP) will receive the award at the opening session of the PBCC’s Annual Conference Oct. 14.

“Dr. Julian conducts research that has a dramatic and lasting impact on all women; we are thrilled to present him with this award to honor his ongoing contributions to breast cancer research” said Pat Halpin-Murphy, President & Founder, PA Breast Cancer Coalition.
Previous recipients of the Potamkin Award include Norman Wolmark, MD., Chairman of the NSABP and Chairman of Human Oncology at AGH; Lawrence Wickerham, MD, Associate Chairman, NSABP and Chief, Section of Cancer Genetics and Prevention, AGH; Larry Norton, MD, Deputy Physician-in-Chief for Breast Cancer Programs at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and John H. Glick, MD, President and Director of the Abramson Family Cancer Research Institute of the University of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Julian is an accomplished breast cancer surgeon, researcher and educator. He has been a principal investigator for numerous breast cancer pre- and post-launch clinical trials, studying topics such as primary systemic combination drug therapy in postmenopausal hormone-receptor positive breast cancer patients, the GeneSearch breast lymph node assay for intraoperative molecular testing, digital mammography imaging and MRI evaluation of the contralateral breast in recently diagnosed female breast cancer patients, among others. He is currently protocol officer for three breast cancer trials conducted by the NSABP. At Allegheny General Hospital he is the NSABP Principal Investigator.

Together with colleagues Yoed Rabin and Dr. Wolmark, Dr. Julian was awarded two U.S. patents for developing new methods and equipment for use in cryosurgery.

Dr. Julian’s research and expertise has been widely published, appearing in more than 120 articles, reviews, book chapters, audio-visual displays, abstracts and scientific exhibits. He is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh and its School of Medicine.
