Women Injured in LA Fitness Shooting Reunite With Paramedics who Treated Them

Tuesday, August 24th, 2010

West Penn Allegheny Health System (WPAHS) and the Pittsburgh Pirates will honor paramedics from Scott Township EMS, SouthBridge EMS and Kirwan Heights VFD/EMS, and the two local women they helped save in the Aug. 4, 2009, LA Fitness shooting. This “Great Save” will be featured before the Tuesday, Aug. 24, game between the Pittsburgh Pirates and St. Louis Cardinals.

WPAHS and the Pirates highlight “Great Saves” to salute local first responders and reunite them with the patients they helped save. The group, including patients, their families and a first response team, sit together during the game and will be featured on the main scoreboard during a pregame ceremony.
Scott Township and SouthBridge EMS, and Kirwan Heights VFD/EMS teams arrived at the scene of the shooting three minutes after requested, and prepared the injured for transfer to the Shock Trauma Center at Allegheny General Hospital. Mary Primis, who was 10 weeks pregnant, was shot twice and suffered broken ribs, a fracture and lung bruising. Heather Sherba was shot once in the right thigh, requiring a tourniquet to stop the bleeding, and bullets also grazed her left thigh and chipped a tooth. For both women, paramedics delivered oxygen, had IVs started, and notified trauma teams to await their arrival, which was a very fast 30 minutes. Both women are doing well and Mary later gave birth to her son, now five months old.
WHAT: Paramedics and the survivors they treated from the August 2009 LA Fitness shootings are reunited and honored as part of the Great Saves program sponsored by West Penn Allegheny Health System and the Pittsburgh Pirates.
WHERE: PNC Park. Contact Matt Nordby for credentials. Rob Rathi of WPAHS will be available to assist media at the ballpark.
WHEN: On-field ceremony begins at 6:30 p.m. tonight before the Pirates-St. Louis Cardinals game
