Two new surgeons join Allegheny General Hospital staff

Friday, August 28th, 2009

Allegheny General Hospital (AGH) announced today that general surgeons Sheri Mancini, MD, FACS, and H. Kenneth Williams Jr., MD, FACS, have joined Allegheny Surgical Associates (ASA), AGH’s primary general surgery practice and a longtime regional leader in the field of general and minimally invasive surgical care.

“We are thrilled to welcome these two outstanding surgeons to our program. Dr. Mancini’s and Dr. Williams’ expertise in minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery and their commitment to exceptional patient care will further enhance the scope and quality of the services we provide,” said Joseph Young, MD, FACS, a founding member of the ASA practice.

In addition to Dr. Young, ASA is comprised of John J. Raves, MD, FACS; Charles F. Cobb, MD, FACS, and Donald P. Atkinson, MD, FACS.

“It is a privilege to join such an established and well respected surgical practice. We look forward to working with the surgeons of ASA and physicians throughout AGH and the West Penn Allegheny Health System to advance the organization’s reputation as one of the region’s and nation’s preeminent centers for innovative surgical care and residency training,” Dr. Mancini said.

A native of Pittsburgh who graduated from West Allegheny High School, Dr. Mancini recently served as a surgeon in the U.S. Navy, providing routine, emergency and trauma care for more than 5,000 military personnel as the only surgeon for an aircraft carrier and its associated destroyers. She was also deployed to Iraq as a field trauma surgeon for the U.S. Marines.

Dr. Mancini is a graduate of Westminster College and earned her medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Her surgical residency was completed at AGH and focused on advanced laparoscopic surgery. She is certified by the American Board of Surgery, and is a member of the American College of Surgeons, the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons and the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons.

Dr. Williams served as Assistant Professor of Surgery for the MCP Hahnemann School of Medicine from 1997 to 2002 in the divisions of General and Vascular Surgery. He has been in private practice since 2002.

A graduate of Washington and Lee University, he received his medical degree from the University of Virginia School of Medicine. He is certified by the American Board of Surgery and is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Williams is also a member of the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons, the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons, the American Hernia Society and the American Society of General Surgeons.

Both Dr. Mancini and Dr. Williams are currently seeing patients at ASA’s AGH office, located at 420 E. North Ave., Suite 304. Dr. Mancini also has an office at Robinson Medical Center in Robinson Township. Appointments for either office can be made by calling (412) 359-4068.

Allegheny Surgical Associates was established at AGH more than 25 years ago and continues to be the leader in providing advanced surgical care for patients. The group performs an extensive array of surgical procedures, many of which use the latest minimally invasive surgical techniques, including thyroid and parathyroid surgery, surgical treatment of breast disease, hepatobiliary surgery, gastrointestinal surgery (stomach, small intestine and colon), surgery of the pancreas, hernia surgery (inguinal, ventral and incisional), laparoscopic anti-reflux surgery and surgical oncology.
