Pledge the Gift of Life

Each year, the lives of thousands of people across the country are saved because someone made the choice to become an organ donor. In April, Allegheny Health Network is honored to celebrate National Donate Life Month and pay tribute to all of those who have bestowed the precious gift of life to another through organ donation. WTAE-TV: New Treatment Gives Stroke Victims Better Chance Of Recovery

Tuesday, August 4th, 2009

PITTSBURGH -- At 29, Amanda King never expected to be a stroke survivor. After giving birth last year, she developed a weakening of the heart muscle that led to a clot in her heart, and part of the clot traveled to her brain.a

"She lost vision in her left eye, suddenly lost the ability to speak. She developed weakness in the entire right side and her arm and leg became paralyzed," said Dr. Andrew Ku, of Allegheny General Hospital.

A year later, there are effects from King's stroke and her subsequent cranial surgery.

"I have had pain in the back of my head. I don't have vision in my left eye," King said.

She may have had permanent paralysis or language loss, had it not been for a tiny catheter at  AGH's Comprehensive Stroke Center.

"What we did, basically, put some catheters to the area of the blockage," Ku said.

Dr. Ashis Tayal showed Wiggin an animation of how the new technology may have saved King from significant disability or death.
