Pledge the Gift of Life

Each year, the lives of thousands of people across the country are saved because someone made the choice to become an organ donor. In April, Allegheny Health Network is honored to celebrate National Donate Life Month and pay tribute to all of those who have bestowed the precious gift of life to another through organ donation. Visit AHNdonate.org to learn more and register to be an organ donor.

KDKA-TV: West Penn Allegheny Health System holds G-20 drill

Thursday, September 10th, 2009

With the G-20 days away, Allegheny General Hospital is preparing for what could happen. Being close to the Convention Center, they are to receive injured protestors and police and they have to be ready for business as usual.

During the G-20 the Allegheny General Hospital Emergency Department expects to have busier than normal days. To prepare, they held a special drill Wednesday to prepare for the worst.

All at once, patients flooded the emergency room with stab wounds, head wounds, unknown chemical exposures, belly pain and an injured pregnant patient and a newborn.

Some patients didn't speak English. Some patients also needed to be decontaminated.

"People have unknown fluids sprayed at them at the protest sites a lot of times are not toxic but you never know that going in to it," Dr. Tom Stein said.

Communication is always a big challenge.

"The most difficult situations usually are the communications situations where we don't have a good idea of what is happening at the scene, and communicating between the units of the hospital," Dr. Fred Harchelroad said.
