Newsmaker: Dr. Peter J. Janetta

Residence: Squirrel Hill

Age: 77

Family: Wife, Diana; six children; two stepchildren

Occupation: Vice chairman of the neurosurgery department at Allegheny General Hospital, North Side

Education: Graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in Philadelphia. He performed his medical internship at the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center and his residency at the University of California, Los Angeles Medical Center. He had a fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center.

Background: Janetta is one of the world's leading neurosurgical pioneers. His research into the pathology and treatment of cranial nerve compression syndromes is regarded as a breakthrough in neurological disease. Compression of cranial nerves can lead to debilitating illnesses that affect sensation and motor function of the tongue, eyes and facial muscles. Janetta has written more than 400 scientific articles, abstracts and book chapters. During the past 30 years, more than 150 neurosurgeons have received their training under Janetta.

Noteworthy: The World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies recently awarded Janetta its Medal of Honor in recognition of his contributions to the advancement of medicine. The medal was presented at the federation's annual meeting in Boston.
