West Penn Allegheny Health System Recruits Senior Lahey Clinic Executive, Sanford R. Kurtz, MD, to Lead Physician Organization

Tuesday, September 15th, 2009

West Penn Allegheny Health System (WPAHS) announced today that Sanford R. Kurtz, MD, has been named Executive Vice President, Chief Medical Officer and President of its newly established Physician Organization. Dr. Kurtz will assume his position with West Penn Allegheny on October 15, 2009.

Dr. Kurtz is a nationally recognized healthcare executive who has served as chief operating officer and executive vice president of the Lahey Clinic in Burlington, MA since 2000. He is also vice chairman of Lahey’s Board of Governors, a body of physicians that serves as the organization’s executive leadership, and a member of its Board of Trustees.

At the Lahey Clinic, Dr. Kurtz has helped develop and manage one of the nation’s preeminent physician-led, non-profit healthcare institutions. The Clinic was founded by a physician in 1923 and is a teaching hospital of Tufts University School of Medicine.  It has earned international recognition for the quality of its clinical programs, the integration of its physician group practices and its multi-disciplinary, patient centric approach to medicine.

Dr. Kurtz will now be responsible for designing, building and leading a multi-specialty physician organization at West Penn Allegheny that effectively integrates the System’s more than 700 employed physicians.

He will report directly to West Penn Allegheny president and chief executive officer Christopher T. Olivia, MD.

“Dr. Kurtz is an exceptionally talented physician executive whose experience and vision are ideally suited to this most important new role for our organization. West Penn Allegheny is the only physician led healthcare provider in western Pennsylvania and a competent physician organization is absolutely critical to our long term success,” Dr. Olivia said.

Dr. Kurtz joins a group of recently appointed physician leaders at West Penn Allegheny, including Michael DeVita, MD, executive vice president of Medical Affairs and chief medical officers Tony Farah, MD, at Allegheny General Hospital, David Lerberg, MD, at West Penn Hospital, Mark Rubino, MD, at West Penn Hospital Forbes Campus and Thomas Corkery, MD, at Canonsburg Hospital.

“I am thrilled to join the leadership team at West Penn Allegheny as it continues its great progress towards establishing a premier physician led organization and transitioning the System into the region’s and one of the nation’s healthcare quality and service leaders,” Dr. Kurtz said. “This is a tremendous opportunity to build a physician organization from the ground up, creating an ideal clinical practice environment that is attractive to physicians and fosters a spirit of collaboration in the pursuit of clinical care excellence, education and research throughout the organization.”

Dr. Kurtz is currently responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Lahey Clinic and is the hospital’s senior administrative leader. He also manages Lahey's Internet based, high-risk patient population management program and has developed programs that integrate clinic-based outpatient care management and community-based resource programs to improve health outcomes.

Dr. Kurtz has held important positions on a number of national scientific and professional organizations throughout his career. He is a past chair of the American Medical Group Association (AMGA), the Advisory Committee to the Trustees on Group Practice of the American Medical Association and the Steering Committee for the Group Practice Improvement Network (GPIN).

Dr. Kurtz has been a member of the executive medical and administrative staff at Lahey Clinic since 1982, serving as both chair of the Department of Laboratory Medicine and a medical operating officer prior to his appointment as chief operating officer.

Dr. Kurtz received his medical degree from the six-year medical program at the Boston University School of Medicine and completed post-graduate training with an internship at Boston City Hospital and a residency at New England Deaconess Hospital.
