Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: West Penn Allegheny names leader for physician organization

Thursday, September 17th, 2009

By Allison M. Heinrichs

West Penn Allegheny Health System announced today that it has selected a leader for its newly established Physician Organization, which it hopes will integrate its more than 700 physicians into a clinical practice environment that fosters collaboration in patient care and research.

Dr. Sanford R. Kurtz, former chief operating officer and executive vice president of the Lahey Clinic in Burlington, Mass., will assume the position on Oct. 15.

The Lahey Clinic was founded by a physician in 1923 and Kurtz helped manage it as a physician-led, nonprofit healthcare institution since 2000. The clinic is a teaching hospital of Tufts University School of Medicine and has been recognized for the integration of its physician group practices and multi-disciplinary approach to medicine.

Kurtz will be responsible for designing, building and leading the multi-specialty physician organization at West Penn Allegheny and will report directly to the health system's president and chief executive officer, Dr. Christopher T. Olivia.
