Pledge the Gift of Life

KDKA-TV: New Westin Hotels and Resorts Study Shows Americans Value Sleep Over Sex

Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009

A majority of Americans think a great night's sleep is more important than sex, according to a survey done by Westin Hotels and Resorts.

KDKA-TV's David Highfield talked with a local expert about how detrimental not getting enough sleep can be.

Dr. Lewis Kline from West Penn Allegheny System studies sleep.

"Most people require maybe seven or eight hours of sleep. The average is actually under that, it's closer to six hours," Dr. Lewis Kline said.

A lack of sleep can lead to big problems. Both, the Exxon Valdez accident and Three Mile Island partial nuclear meltdown were found to be sleep related accidents.

While those are two major examples, a more common problem is sleep related car accidents.

"Driving accidents are a huge thing and there are quite few studies showing that sleep deprivation is a kin to having two mixed drinks," Dr. Kline said.

Westin Hotels and Resorts recently surveyed more than 12,000 frequent travelers about sleep.
