October Classes Offered at Destination Wellness

Natrona Heights, Pa., - The following classes are available to the public at Destination Wellness located at the Galleria at Pittsburgh Mills:

Highmark® Personal Nutrition Coaching
This program empowers the individual to sustain healthy lifestyle changes by assisting with setting goals, better food selection and meal planning. This one-on-one counseling session is facilitated by a registered dietitian and is designed to address the nutritional changes needed to manage heart disease, diabetes, weight management and other health related issues. Sessions are by appointment only. There is no fee for Highmark members to participate in this program; a nominal fee for non-Highmark members. Call 724-274-5202 today for appointment/details.

Highmark® Clear the Air: Smoking Cessation
Your health is worth one more try. This one-session, two-hour program is the step you take BEFORE deciding to quit tobacco. This program helps you to identify your reasons for quitting and gives you the tools you need to quit for good. There is no fee for Highmark members to participate in this program; a nominal fee for non-Highmark members. Call for your one-on-one session with a trained smoking cessation instructor at 724-274-5202.

Blood Drive
10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Donate blood and save a life. With every four blood donations, you will receive a $25 gift certificate to a local business.

Heartsaver AED/CPR
5-9 p.m.
This course includes adult, child and infant CPR and automated external defibrillator (AED) usage. Relief of choking in the adult, child and infant victim also included. A course completion card valid for two years will be given after skills and written testing. Fee: $35 (student manual included). Call to register at 724-274-5202. Space is limited.

Wednesday, October 6
Baby Care Basics One-Day Option
6-9 p.m.
During this class, parents-to-be will be taught about infant feeding, circumcision, selecting a pediatrician, newborn behavior and soothing techniques. Parents will also receive “hands on” practice of basic baby care skills using baby dolls. Cost: $50/couple. Call to register at 412-578-7271.

Depression: Sad, Bad or Mad
5-7 p.m.
Depression is the second leading cause of death and disability (next to heart disease) for all ages. Early diagnosis and effective treatment of depression can improve the health and quality of life for individuals and their families. From 6-6:30 p.m., join Radha Kambhampati, MD from Penn Psycare, Inc. in Lower Burrell, Pa., when he will give a presentation on what depression is and what can be done about it. In support of National Depression Screening Day®, participants will have the opportunity to take part in a brief, free depression screening from 5-7 p.m. Registration is required by calling 724-274-5202. Safe Sitter® babysitting course
1-5:30 p.m. both days
This two-day class provides children ages 11-13 with essential skills in safe sitting and handling emergencies. Fee: $50/student. Call to register at 724-274-5202.

Flu Shot Clinic
11 a.m.-3 p.m.
Flu Shots will be scheduled by appointment only. Must be 18 years of age or older. Under 65: $25 per shot (cash or check payable to AKMC).

Coffee with the Pharmacist
2 p.m.
October is Talk about Prescriptions month. Here is your opportunity to discuss your prescriptions and learn about general medicine principles with Alle-Kiski Medical Center’s clinical pharmacist, Heather Goetze. Bring your medications and/or supplements for a compatibility review scheduled one-on-one with the pharmacist after the presentation. Registration for this event is required by calling 724-274-5202. BLS for Healthcare Provider CPR RENEWAL
9 a.m.-12 p.m.
If you have a current course completion card for a healthcare provider CPR class in the last two years, you can take the renewal course. You must present your current card the day of class. This class covers the information in the healthcare provider class in an abbreviated format. Upon course completion, participants receive a card valid for two years. Fee: $30/student (includes required student manual). Call to register at

Heartsaver First Aid with AED/CPR
1-6 p.m.
The first aid course includes basic first aid, adult, child, and infant CPR and automated external defibrillator (AED) usage. Look Good…Feel Better
10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
This free class is designed to help any woman with a cancer diagnosis deal with the physical changes caused by chemotherapy and radiation. A trained cosmetologist teaches cosmetic techniques, wig selection and care, and scarf tying. The program is a partnership between the American Cancer Society, the National Cosmetology Association and the Personal Care Products Council Foundation. To register call 1-800-227-2345.

Bone Health: Your Risk Factors, Your Choices

Osteoporosis is a major public health problem, and yet it’s almost entirely preventable through healthy lifestyles choices. Join us for a wellness workshop, Bone Health: Your Risk Factors, Your Choices, to learn what lifestyle improvements and choices you can make at any age to improve bone health. Seeds of Change: Collecting, Preserving & Storing Seeds

As the weather changes and the growing season comes to an end, we need to begin our harvest for next year’s garden. Join Horticulturist & Naturalist Tammy Watychowicz from Boyce Park Nature Center for a free horticultural & art therapy seminar dedicated to preserving seeds from your special flowers, fruit and vegetable plants and trees. From growing to grazing… what is really in the food you harvest? Join Dr. Danielle Godinez, from Saxonburg Medical Center as she explains the nutritional benefits from food that is grown in your garden. Hands on activity: making your own seed packets. AARP Driver’s Safety two-day course
10 a.m.-2:30 p.m. both days
Tune up your driving skills and learn how to adjust to age-related driving changes. Participants will learn how to obtain insurance discounts for attending this course. *Participants must attend both days of this training course. Two-rescuer scenarios with bag valve mask, foreign body airway obstruction and automated external defibrillation (AED).
