Pledge the Gift of Life

Each year, the lives of thousands of people across the country are saved because someone made the choice to become an organ donor. In April, Allegheny Health Network is honored to celebrate National Donate Life Month and pay tribute to all of those who have bestowed the precious gift of life to another through organ donation. Visit AHNdonate.org to learn more and register to be an organ donor.

Pittsburgh Tribune-Review: Bystanders save Corry man's life after he collapses at PNC Park

Thursday, September 3rd, 2009

By Jessica Turnbull

In his hospital bed at Allegheny General Hospital on Tuesday, Chuck Trimble held his wife's hand and exchanged military and sports banter with Dr. Christopher Post, one of the people who helped save his life at PNC Park a week ago.

"He didn't give up on me," said Trimble, 60, of Corry, who suffered cardiac arrest Aug. 23.

Trimble came with his wife Sharon and grandson Brant Xander, 4, for their annual trip to see the Pirates take on Trimble's lifelong favorite, the Cincinnati Reds. During the third inning, Trimble collapsed. His heart shut down, and he had no pulse, blood pressure or blood supply to his organs.

Most people who suffer an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest don't make it, said Dr. Jerome Granato, Trimble's cardiologist.

Trimble's family and doctors attribute his survival to fast-acting bystanders who performed CPR. And he had the good fortune of sitting in the same section as Post, a nurse and an emergency medical technician. PNC Park staff located an automated external defibrillator.

Post, a pediatric ear, nose and throat specialist at Allegheny General, said several tours in Afghanistan with the Army Reserve prepared him to act quickly when he heard a doctor was needed.
