Robert Keenan, MD, Appointed Chief Quality Officer For AGH and West Penn Hospital

Robert Keenan, MD, has been named Chief Quality Officer and Vice President at Allegheny General Hospital (AGH) and West Penn Hospital. 

In addition to serving as the chair of AGH’s Medical Executive Committee, Dr. Keenan is currently Chief of Thoracic Surgery for West Penn Allegheny Health System, Director of the AGH Center for Thoracic Surgery, and a Professor of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery with the Drexel University College of Medicine. 

In his new role, Dr. Keenan will provide leadership in developing a quality and patient safety infrastructure. He will also develop strategies that will bring a consistent approach to quality measurement and a culture of shared best practices across both campuses. 

He will help to lead a coordinated, team-based effort to develop, monitor, assess and improve outcomes in the safety and efficiency of inpatient and outpatient care.  In addition, he will be responsible for quality, data analysis, measurement, outcomes, process improvement, patient/staff safety, accreditation, clinical risk management, infection control, and will serve as a liaison with external agencies, including The Joint Commission, a non-profit organization which accredits and certifies more than 19,000 health care organizations and programs in the United States.

Dr. Keenan joined Allegheny General in 2000.  In addition to being a skilled surgeon and physician leader, he has led dozens of clinical research studies, and published more than 200 articles, books, chapters and/or abstracts.  Dr. Keenan resides in Fox Chapel.
