Studies suggest that 1,200 milligrams daily of calcium carbonate per day may reduce the fatigue, anxiety and irritability associated with premenstrual syndrome.
Abnormal levels of calcium in the blood can create mood disturbances, and it's thought that women with PMS may have an underlying abnormality in calcium regulation. These studies have shown a 50 percent reduction in symptoms, with no significant side effects.
Although the best sources of calcium are milk, cheese and other dairy foods, women should use supplements because these foods are usually high in calories and fat. Calcium carbonate, which is found in antacids like Tums and Rolaids, is the least expensive supplement and the easiest to take. No matter what supplement you use, however, it should be taken with a meal.
