Prehospital Services at West Penn

The Western Pennsylvania Hospital in Pittsburgh is a 500-bed academic medical center that has been regionally and nationally recognized for excellence in nursing, bariatric surgery, bone marrow and cell transplantation, burn care, cardiovascular care, joint care, and reproductive medicine.

West Penn Hospital is the first hospital in Pittsburgh and western Pennsylvania to be awarded Magnet recognition status by the American Nurses Credentialing Center in 2006. This prestigious 4-year designation recognizes excellence in nursing.

West Penn Burn Center is the only burn center in the region verified by the American Burn Association (ABA) and the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and the only burn center in Pennsylvania to earn ABA/ACS verification FOUR times.

Established in 1969, West Penn Burn Center treats more than 500 inpatients per year and serves as a national, regional and community resource dedicated to the prevention and care of burn injuries.

The Simulation, Teaching, and Academic Research (STAR) Center at West Penn Allegheny Health System is dedicated to achieving excellence in patient care through the pursuit of lifelong learning, research and innovation. Using state-of-the-art manikins that mimic the symptoms of a wide range of health conditions, the STAR Center provides hands-on learning opportunities to allow aspiring and practicing health professionals to perfect their skills in situations closely resembling the clinical environment.
