Our facilities are home to a wide spectrum of biochemical, physiological and medical device research and development projects. More than 400 active research projects are in progress throughout the System, with nearly 150 West Penn Allegheny faculty serving as principal investigators.
West Penn Allegheny Health System is one of the most advanced research centers in the world. Our researchers, many who are also part of our clinical staff, are engaged in unlocking the mysteries of illness and translating that innovation to superior treatment plans for our patients. In addition, our Office of Technology Transfer helps researchers evaluate, protect and commercialize their intellectual properties. As a result, scientists are better able to generate ideas that have the potential to improve patient care.
West Penn Allegheny Health System is involved with numerous clinical trials to help our doctors find new forms of treatment for a variety of diseases and conditions. We offer opportunities for patients to participate in these clinical trials. All studies that involve human subjects are reviewed by our Institutional Review Board (IRB) before they are permitted to begin. Our IRB's purpose is to protect the rights and welfare of the research subjects in a study.
