We're pleased you are considering the Allegheny General Hospital (AGH) / Western Pennsylvania (WPH) Internal Medicine Residency Program for the next stage of your academic experience. It is an excellent program that provides you with opportunities to grow professionally, to expand your understanding and knowledge of the practice of medicine, and to acquire many new and lasting friendships. The West Penn Allegheny Health System (WPAHS) has earned an international reputation for excellence and innovation in patient care, medical education and research. Serving Pittsburgh and the surrounding five-state areas, the respective 720-bed and 500-bed academic medical centers offers a wide array of medical and surgical services. WPAHS has been a national leader in medicine since its founding in the early 1880's. We are a fully accredited institution with over 2,700 faculty members and a wide range of residency programs in medicine and scientific research. We have over 500 residents and fellows and a physician's network with over 233 clinical practice offices throughout Pittsburgh and the western Pennsylvania area. Last year we had approximately 78,000 inpatient admissions, 800,000 outpatient vistis and 196,000 emergency room visits. WPAHS has been listed among America's Best Hospitals by U.S. News & World Report magazine. Our hospitals are also listed with HCIA-Sachs, a leading healthcare industry research organization, and we also enjoy a reputation as the region's most preferred healthcare provider, as voted by consumers in a poll conducted by the National Research Corporation. WPAHS has affiliations with excellent medical schools. Allegheny General, on Pittsburgh's North Side, is a regional campus for the Philadelphia-based Drexel University School of Medicine. The Western Pennsylvania Hospital, in Bloomfield, is the western Clinical Campus of the Temple University School of Medicine and is also a major affiliate of the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine and the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.
The individuals in our residency program are encouraged to think critically and apply evidence-based medicine in a supportive team-based model of care. Graduates interested in subspecialty training receive competitive fellowships or pursue careers in academic medicine, hospital medicine and primary care.
