2011 Summer Camp for Burned  Children

In 1986, West Penn Burn Center established its Summer Camp for Burned Children. The goal was to give children who have been burned a chance to heal physically and emotionally in a supportive environment that offered plenty of opportunities for fun.

At this free, five-day camp, kids ages 7 to 17 who have been treated at West Penn Burn Center meet to share their stories and enjoy new experiences. With the guidance of skilled professionals, children are encouraged to meet new challenges and to take positive risks by participating in adventures — such as rope climbing — that help build confidence while building strong bodies.

Counselors from West Penn Hospital and West Penn Burn Center make sure that campers gain the most they can from appropriate activities. Skilled medical staff are equipped for emergencies and are able to supervise dressing changes, pressure garments, and scheduled medications.  Firefighter groups such as the local F.O.O.L.S. and Fire & Iron also volunteer their time, equipment, and expertise to enhance the fun and learning children experience during Camp.

The Burn Center’s Summer Camp is underwritten by The Western Pennsylvania Hospital Foundation and the generosity of individuals, local corporations, and foundations. Funding is also provided through Aluminum Cans for Burned Children (ACBC), a non-profit recycling program that helps children who have been burned to heal and helps prevent other children from being burned.
