Radiofrequency Ablation
This technique uses high temperatures to treat liver tumors. A thin needle is inserted into the tumor, and electrical current is passed through the tip of the needle. The needle then becomes very hot, potentially destroying the tumor. The procedure lasts 10-15 minutes, and the patient typically goes home on the same day.
Smaller tumors up to 4 centimeters in diameter can potentially be treated by this method.
As with any treatment method, radiofrequency ablation comes with a risk of complications and tumor recurrence. These will be discussed further at your visit.
The effectiveness of radiofrequency ablation in the treatment of liver tumors is still being investigated at some centers. At Allegheny General Hospital, we have come to prefer less-invasive techniques, such as stereotactic body radiotherapy, but may consider radiofrequency ablation in some cases.
