West Penn Hospital obstetricians have been leaders in medical education since John M. Duff, MD, Professor of Obstetrics at West Penn along with 12 West Penn physicians founded the Western Pennsylvania Medical College on October 5, 1885.

In the spirit of their tradition, West Penn Hospital provides excellence in maternal and infant care for more than 3000 births annually, and the 45-bed Level III NICU at West Penn is a major regional referral center for sick newborns, admitting more than 700 ill newborns annually from western Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia.

The Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program at WPAHS, based at West Penn Hospital, is sponsored by  the Allegheny General Hospital - Western Pennsylvania Hospital Medical Education Consortium.

It is a fully accredited, four-year training program that enrolls five residents in each academic year. Residents receive extensive training in a structured educational environment in all aspects of obstetrics and gynecology as well as primary care, and they graduate with a strong knowledge base and the clinical / operative skills necessary to practice independently, competently and compassionately.
