Golf Warm-up Tips

Whether you are a professional or a weekend warrior, warming up can improve your golf game.

Warm-ups can help you to increase golf club head speed, improve accuracy and stay injury free. Follow these tips to loosen up your muscles and ligaments, as well as prepare yourself mentally for a round of golf.

  • The golf swing involves a transfer of energy from the ground all the way up through the hips, shoulders, elbows and wrists, so it's important to adequately stretch all the portions of the body. Avoid static stretching, where you reach forward and hold the stretch for 20 to 30 seconds. Research shows that this form of stretching may actually impair your golf swing. Instead, do dynamic stretching exercises, where you briefly but gently stretch a muscle to a full range of movement. Some common stretches include arm circles, arms across the chest, lunges and side bends.

  • Practice your golf swings on the driving range with every other club, from the wedge to the midirons to the driver. Five swings per club should be adequate to loosen up your muscles and get a feel for the golf course. Strive for a smooth swing, rather than distance and accuracy during your warm-ups.

  • Get on the putting green and practice putts from various distances. This will help you become better acclimated to the pace of the putting green.

  • It takes several hours to play a round of golf so it's important to stay hydrated. You can replace fluids with water or a sports drink (which replaces both fluids and electrolytes).
