Pediatrics
Just for Kids
While Allegheny General Hospital has long been known for excellent care in a variety of specialties, one of the hospital’s best kept secrets is its Department of Pediatrics.
The Department of Pediatrics is home to a staff of pediatric-focused and trained, dedicated professionals who are experts at providing outstanding inpatient and outpatient medical care, and at helping to ease the minds of our young patients and their families.
As part of a widely recognized academic medical center, AGH Pediatrics can provide the medical care of children and adolescents - from birth through 21 years. WPAHS’s pediatric facilities include both general pediatric inpatient and outpatient services at our AGH campus. In the hospital, the children are cared for 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, by in-hospital, board-certified pediatric physicians (our Pediatric Hospitalist Service).
AGH Kids Pediatrics Practice
AGH Kids Pediatrics is a comprehensive pediatric practice providing compassionate care to children of Pittsburgh from birth through age 21. We are conveniently located within AGH, on the 6th floor of the South tower. We have a friendly and dedicated staff, hoping to keep you and your family in the best of health. Appointments are made relatively quickly, with sick visits often scheduled the same day. We have many ancillary services, including access to an onsite radiology department, and full laboratory services within the office. We gladly accept most insurance.
Hours of operation: 8a - 5p. To make appointments or ask questions: 412.359.3157.
Emergency Care
When your child comes to the AGH Emergency Room, there is a pediatrician available 24\7 for consultation to the ED staff. In order to minimize your child's wait time, the pediatrician may be asked to come see your child personally. Our goal is always to provide excellent pediatric care, whether in the clinic, the hospital, or the Emergency Room.
Inpatient Pediatrics - Hospitalist Service
Any time a child is ill and admitted to the hospital can be a very emotional time for the family. That’s why we have a comprehensive staff ready to meet all of your child’s needs, as well as your own. You can rest assured knowing that when your child is admitted to the Pediatric Hospitalist Service, our attending Pediatric Hospitalists are in-house, 24 hours a day to provide continuous and personalized care for your child.
Throughout your child’s hospital stay, a multidisciplinary team gathers daily to share information and to develop and to implement a plan of care for your child and family. The team primarily consists of a Pediatric Hospitalist and your child’s nurse, a child life specialist, and also may include pediatric medical and surgical sub-specialists, all of whom are intimately involved in taking care of your child and family. We are focused on providing personalized, family-centered care to all our patients.
Special Services
To help support your child and family during this difficult time, we offer the caring and expertise of our Child Life Specialist and Social Services. These specialists play an integral role in helping our patients and families meet the emotional needs involved in a child’s illness. Through therapeutic play, our child life specialist will help your child make sense of and cope with his or her illness. Siblings can also benefit from activities to help them deal with the impact on their family’s routine and anxiety about their sibling’s illness and recovery.

Specialty Pediatric Services
AGH Pediatrics offers patients high quality care through a variety of inpatient and outpatient services. Below are listed a sampling of our outstanding divisions and services available to you and your child.
Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology
Recognized locally, nationally, and internationally, our physicians at the Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology Center offer diagnosis and treatment for children, adolescents and adults with these conditions. These specialists are available to see your child (or you) in either an inpatient or outpatient setting. They are also involved in pioneering research for more effective methods of diagnosis and treatment for allergic and immune diseases. Throughout the year, the division conducts multiple sports camps for children with asthma.
Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT)
Regarded as clinical leaders and research innovators in the field of otorhinolaryngology, AGH’s ENT specialists lead the way in new approaches for treating pediatric ear, nose, and throat problems, including the management of tonsillitis, adenoiditis, sinusitis, snoring and sleep-disordered breathing. Diagnostic services are available for pediatric patients with hearing loss, speech-language disorders, and congenital abnormalities of the head and neck. The surgeons are supported by a caring and personable team of assistants and clinical staff.
Orthopaedics
Our Pediatric Orthopaedists offer specialized care for children and adolescents who have congenital and developmental problems with joints, muscles, and bones. In addition to treating patients with bone fractures, dislocations of joints, and scoliosis, our Pediatric Orthopaedists also provide care to children with spina bifida, cerebral palsy, and sports injuries.
