West Penn Hospital
The Western Pennsylvania Hospital in Pittsburgh is a 292-bed academic medical center that has been regionally and nationally recognized for excellence in nursing, bariatric surgery, bone marrow and cell transplantation, burn care, cardiovascular care, joint care, and reproductive medicine.
West Penn Hospital is the first hospital in Pittsburgh and western Pennsylvania to be awarded Magnet recognition status by the American Nurses Credentialing Center in 2006 and the first to be redesignated Magnet in 2012. This prestigious internationally recognized designation for excellence in nursing services has been achieved by only about 6% of the more than 6,000 U.S. healthcare facilities.
West Penn Burn Center is the only burn center in the region verified by the American Burn Association (ABA) and the American College of Surgeons (ACS) to treat both pediatric and adult patients, and it is the only burn center in Pennsylvania to earn ABA/ACS verification five times.
Established in 1969, West Penn Burn Center treats hundreds of patients a year and serves as a national, regional, and community resource dedicated to the prevention and care of burn injuries, offering both professional and consumer education.
The Simulation, Teaching, and Academic Research (STAR) Center at West Penn Allegheny Health System is dedicated to achieving excellence in patient care through the pursuit of lifelong learning, research and innovation. Using state-of-the-art manikins that mimic the symptoms of a wide range of health conditions, the STAR Center provides hands-on learning opportunities to allow aspiring and practicing health professionals to perfect their skills in situations closely resembling the clinical environment.
