Thoracic Surgery

Diseases of the chest are among the most common ailments affecting adult Americans today. In
western Pennsylvania, lung and esophageal diseases are particularly prominent healthcare problems.

At the Center for Thoracic Surgery, we offer one of the most proficient programs of care in the country for patients with thoracic diseases. Our board-certified surgeons work closely with patients and their referring physicians to coordinate a multidisciplinary approach for treating disorders involving structures located in the chest (thoracic) area, including the lungs, esophagus (food pipe), mediastinum (tissues between the lungs), ribs and bronchi (air tubes) leading to the lungs.

We offer surgical treatments for a wide array of diseases and conditions, including:

• Benign and malignant lung conditions
• Emphysema (COPD)
• Mediastinal masses
• Myasthenia gravis
• Pleural diseases
• Benign and malignant esophageal problems
• Hyperhidrosis
• Airway obstructions
• Gastroesophageal reflux disease
• Hiatal hernias
• Esophageal motility disturbances

A variety of options are considered when developing a plan to best meet each patient’s specific needs. The latest technologies, including endobronchial ultrasound and navigational bronchoscopy, are used for the diagnosis of many conditions. Whenever possible, our surgeons perform minimally invasive, video-assisted thoracoscopic or endoscopic procedures to minimize each patient’s discomfort and recovery time. We also work with specialists from other fields such as pulmonary medicine, gastroenterology, medical oncology and radiation oncology to coordinate multidisciplinary care when required.

From the initial visit and diagnosis to treatment to post-surgical follow-up, we provide personalized attention to each patient. In addition, our patients benefit from the latest treatment strategies and may be provided with opportunities to participate in national, multi-institutional and local research trials.
