Transplant Surgery
Transplantation Services at West Penn Allegheny Health System
West Penn Allegheny Health System’s Transplant Program, based at Allegheny General Hospital, enjoys a longstanding reputation as a high quality, nationally recognized center of care. Through superior, personalized care and state-of-the-art treatment capabilities, we are giving patients in need of organ transplantation new hope for a higher quality of life.
At West Penn Allegheny, we perform a variety of transplant procedures, including:
Our nationally renowned surgeons are certified by Medicare and the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) and are on the forefront of the latest surgical procedures. They work with a team of multidisciplinary specialists to develop a customized treatment plan for each patient.
We take special pride in our superior outcomes. Our transplant patients enjoy survival rates, equal to or better than national averages. We use a number of anti-rejection medications in various combinations to decrease the risk of rejection, as well as lower the side effects frequently seen with these drugs.
While the Transplant Programs at West Penn Allegheny Health System offer excellent medical care, we pride ourselves on the individualized care we give to patients and their families. Patients are followed closely by their transplant coordinator, who explains all aspects of the waiting process, follows their medical status on a regular basis and maintains communication with their physician to assure continuity of care. Following surgery, the transplant coordinator provides education, maintains regular follow-up and facilitates care when needed. Our social workers and financial coordinator are always available to provide assistance with family counseling issues, stress reduction and financial coverage. Patients can count on 24-hour access to our transplant team whenever they have a question or concern.
