Showcasing HR’s Role in Operational Excellence through Simulation Based Learning

A  Case Study of West Penn Allegheny Health Systems’ “STAR” Program

Training and learning programs must embrace new evolutions in the workplace – personalities and learning styles that have grown beyond the strict rubric of traditional classroom instruction.  Tech-savvy with expectations of seamless access to information at their fingertips, the workforce of today has enabled progressive organizations to revamp their learning programs and capitalize on new growth opportunities, and healthcare is no exception.

STAR, the Simulation, Training & Academic Research Center at West Penn Allegheny Health systems, has made some great strides in delivering advanced simulation programs to increase the quality and effectiveness of training and learning throughout the organization. Programs have been created for everyone in the organization, from clinical staff through administrative staff, with many programs designed to be delivered to the organization as a whole.  Simulation training allows participants to transfer & apply theoretical knowledge to the clinical or work environment.  The learning experiences can focus on critical thinking, decision making and teamwork through clinical and surgical training.  STAR has gone so far as to even create a training program for executives to design their own simulation trainings, creating an effective, collaborative learning environment.  While the results speak for themselves – enhanced quality of care, decreased medical errors, and increased retention – Cindy Carson & Donamarie Wilfong will share their “STAR” story with an emphasis on how to get the program off the ground.
