Labor and Delivery at Allegheny General

The hours between the onset of labor and the baby's birth are the most critical hours of pregnancy. Preparing for this time can help to minimize the anxiety; and for you, the choice of where to give birth may be one of the most important decisions of your pregnancy.

LDR Suites

The Labor, Delivery and Recovery Suites at Allegheny General Hospital provide an environment at once comfortable and well-equipped to handle your medical needs -- whether your pregnancy is low or high risk.

Decorated to provide a homelike atmosphere, the private suites also are furnished with the same advanced medical equipment, such as fetal monitors, found in most traditional labor and delivery rooms. You usually remain in one of these suites from the time you are admitted to Allegheny General until about one to two hours after delivery. At that time, you are transferred to one of our post partum rooms. Anesthesia staff are available on site 24 hours a day should you require epidural anesthesia.

Visiting

Visiting hours on the Labor and Delivery Unit are unlimited for the father, and liberal for other family members, including young children, who are also welcome to visit the mother and baby.

We at Allegheny General Hospital are committed to keeping your infant safe during your stay at the Gilmore Women's and Infants Center.

Staff ID Badges

Staff with authorization to take infants from the nursery or your room have special colored ID badges. You should not give your infant to any staff not visibly displaying a the Hospital ID Badge distinctive to the OB floor.

Visitor Badges

Your visitors will be required to obtain a visitor's sticker from the Main Lobby Information Desk or the Security Office. When coming to the unit they will have to call from the phone in the hallway and display their visitor's sticker to enter the unit.

Special Care

A special operating room also is nearby and available for use if an emergency Caesarean section becomes necessary. In addition to the Labor, Delivery and Recovery suites, Allegheny General also has a special care unit if you have delivered via Cesarean section or require a higher level of nursing care.

The Staff of the Gilmore Women's and Infants Center are dedicated to providing you with the highest quality of care. We look forward to caring for you and your family.
