The Gilmore Women and Infants Center
at Allegheny General Hospital
Named in honor of the late James Gilmore Jr., M.D., former chairman of AGH’s Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology (OB-GYN), and in dedication of his father, James Gilmore Sr., M.D., who served as chairman of the AGH Obstetrical program from 1923-1955, the center houses four OB/GYN dedicated operating rooms with an adjacent recovery room; 10 labor/delivery/recovery rooms; a neonatal intensive care unit which includes 24-hour supervision by board certified neonatologists; a routine nursery and an OB dedicated triage suite with on-site 24-hour ultrasound capabilities. The center also boasts 19 private, spacious, and contemporary postpartum rooms.
"For more than a century, obstetrics and gynecological care has been a cornerstone of Allegheny General’s commitment to providing high quality, comprehensive healthcare services to families in the greater Pittsburgh community. Under the direction of physicians like James Gilmore, exceptional, personalized care became the foundation of AGH’s women and infants program and it is a great privilege and honor to be able to continue in that fine tradition with a state of the art center dedicated in his name. Dr. Gilmore was the epitome of professionalism, compassion and competence in the care of his patients, a legacy that will resonate with and hopefully inspire future generations of physicians who practice within these walls,” said Eugene A. Scioscia Jr., M.D., Chairman of the AGH Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Gilmore Jr. served as Chairman of AGH’s Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology from 1962 to 1986. He is responsible for founding the hospital’s OB-GYN residency program, served as president of the medical staff from 1975-1976 and 1979-1980, and in 1994, received the Allegheny County Medical Society Nathaniel Bedford Award in honor of his long-term dedication to his patients.
