September 30, 2009

Allegheny General Hospital (AGH) presents
“Expressions of Hope: A Cancer Awareness Expo” on Oct. 10

Event includes national and local artists
exhibiting work that reflects their struggles with cancer

PITTSBURGH – Cancer prevention and awareness is the focus of a free program, “Expressions of Hope: A Cancer Awareness Expo,” scheduled for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 10, at the Allegheny General Hospital Cancer Center.

“Expressions of Hope” will also feature exhibitions of art by cancer patients. The local exhibition features works by AGH cancer patients and family members from throughout the Pittsburgh region, and includes paintings, jewelry, quilting and sculpture.

The national exhibition is a thought-provoking traveling display called “Lilly Oncology on Canvas.” Each piece of art is accompanied by a written description describing how it relates to the artist’s battle with cancer.

Those attending will have the opportunity to take risk assessments to determine their potential risks for various types of cancer. Medical professionals will be on hand to help with a wide variety of issues, from nutritional recommendations to a review of medications.

Full screening exams will be offered for prostate cancer and head and neck cancer. Registration is required for these exams and can be made by calling 1-877-284-2000.
In addition, “Expressions of Hope” will feature
• Information about a variety of cancers, radiation therapy and chemotherapy
• Dermaview skin analysis that shows actual sun damage and potential risk of skin cancer.
• Nutrition screening and evaluation, with participants filling out a questionnaire about their eating habits.
• A tour of the Breast Care Center, with a physician available to answer questions, vouchers available to low-income people who qualify for free mammograms, and the opportunity to schedule a mammogram with easy, 30 minute in/out timing.
• An opportunity for attendees to bring in their medications for a review by a pharmacist.
• “Ask the Doctor,” a question-and-answer session with oncology physicians.
• An opportunity to walk through the Prevention Cancer Foundation’s “Super Colon,” a 20-foot-tall inflatable colon.
• Genetics professionals assessing family history of cancer
• An appearance by “Stuffee,” a 7-foot-tall rag doll from the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh that helps children learn about the human body and healthy living.
• Prizes and giveaways including a three-day, two-night stay for two at Mountaineer Casino and Resort.

Local artists exhibiting at the event include Jodi Stebler of Pittsburgh, paintings; Joann Esposito of New Castle, paintings; Tabitha Zeigler of Clairton, drawing; Diane Morelli of Wexford, jewelry; Cathy Kelly of Oakmont, quilting; Henry Smith of Pittsburgh, painting.
