A type of fungus or yeast called Candida albicans can cause infection in the vagina, the mouth, or moist areas of skin. The infection is called candidiasis.
What causes candidiasis?
It is normal for the skin to have some fungus organisms and some bacteria present that keep the fungus in check. However, certain conditions cause the fungus to multiply and cause infection. These conditions include treatment with antibiotic medication, which destroys the normal bacteria that keep fungus levels in check. Diabetes is another condition that allows fungus to multiply rapidly.
What are the symptoms of candidiasis?
Symptoms of candidiasis in the vagina include a discharge that is thick and white, itching and redness of the outer part of the vagina, and irritation when urinating.
Symptoms of candidiasis of the mouth, called thrush, are white patches on the inside of the cheek.
Infants are prone to candidiasis in the diaper area.
How is candidiasis diagnosed?
A healthcare provider can diagnosis candidiasis with a quick and simple exam. Samples of tissue may be gently scraped and placed on a glass slide for examination under a microscope.
How is candidiasis treated?
Candidiasis is treated with medications. The medication comes in liquid form for application to the inside of the mouth, in cream form for candidiasis on the skin, and in a vaginal suppository to treat yeast infection in the vagina.
How can candidiasis be prevented?
Candidiasis is usually a minor problem but it causes discomfort. To decrease the risk of candidiasis:
- Keep moist areas of the body as cool and dry as possible.
- Avoid wearing wet bathing suits or damp clothing for long periods of time.
- Avoid frequent douching.
- Avoid wearing underwear made of nylon or other non-ventilating materials.
- Include yogurt in your diet.
As always, see your health care provider for any questions or concerns about your health.
