Indiana University of Pennsylvania and The Western Pennsylvania Hospital combined resources in 1972 to provide a cooperative bachelor of science degree program in respiratory care. The IUP/West Penn Hospital program was the first such program in the state and the fifth in the country and is widely recognized as one of the finest respiratory care programs in the country.

What do Respiratory Therapists Do?
Respiratory therapists aid physicians in the evaluation and treatment of heart and lung ailments. They work in a variety of areas such as emergency departments, intensive care units and pulmonary rehabilitation units, home care and a host of other treatment sites.

Academic Qualifications
Students complete pre-clinical coursework on IUP's Indiana campus, then proceed to the junior and senior clinical years at The Western Pennsylvania Hospital.

To enter the clinical phase, students must earn a cumulative grade point average of 2.25 or higher in math and science. An overall grade point average of 2.0 is also required.

A Dedicated Faculty
Students receive individualized academic counseling by the coordinator of Allied Health Professions at IUP. Respiratory Therapy faculty members at The Western Pennsylvania Hospital all have graduate degrees, multiple credentials, and have a combined teaching experience of more than one hundred years. All advisors and faculty are permanent, fulltime employees of Indiana University of Pennsylvania and The Western Pennsylvania Hospital.

With its original 1875 building still standing at the heart of its campus, Indiana University of Pennsylvania has a long tradition of academic excellence. IUP provides an intellectually challenging experience to more than thirteen thousand students at the university's three campuses, all easily accessible from Pittsburgh and the Middle Atlantic region.

Academic offerings include more than one hundred undergraduate majors with a variety of internship and study abroad programs, more than forty masters' degree programs, and eight doctoral degrees. Students in the respiratory therapy program often take clinical preceptorships which provide them with the opportunity for additional experience and learning as well as the opportunity to earn a stipend while still in school.
