The Western
Pennsylvania Hospital
Where High-Tech Academics and Community Meet
The Western Pennsylvania Hospital is an academic medical center with two hospital
campuses that serve Pittsburgh and the surrounding five-state area: The Western Pennsylvania Hospital in Pittsburgh and The Western Pennsylvania Hospital – Forbes Regional
Campus in Monroeville. Part of West Penn Allegheny Health System, The Western Pennsylvania Hospital has earned an international reputation for excellence and innovation in the care of patients, education and research.
In addition to family medicine, West Penn has residencies in internal medicine,
surgery, obstetrics, foot and ankle surgery, emergency medicine, radiology and
anesthesiology.
West Penn is the only hospital in the region to be designated a Center of Excellence
by the Myelodysplastic Syndromes Foundation and it was recently named a
Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence by the American Society for Bariatric
Surgery. The Hospital also houses the patient offices of the Jones Institute at West
Penn Allegheny Health System, an affiliate of the world-renowned Jones Institute
for Reproductive Medicine at Eastern Virginia Medical School.
On December 7, 2006, The Western Pennsylvania Hospital in Pittsburgh became the first and only hospital in Pittsburgh and western Pennsylvania to receive prestigious Magnet recognition status from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). An achievement akin to winning an Olympic gold medal, Magnet recognition status recognizes excellence in nursing services and has been achieved by only 4 percent of all healthcare facilities in the world.
A provider of the most advanced diagnostic and treatment services for all types of
cancer, West Penn Hospital has earned national recognition for its bone marrow
transplant program, one of the largest in Pennsylvania. In addition, West Penn’s Burn
Center is the largest burn care center in the tri-state area, and the first and only burn
center in Pittsburgh to receive verification honors by the American College of
Surgeons and the American Burn Association. The family medicine residency is
enriched by experiences and educational exchanges with these exemplary programs.
As a clinical campus for the Philadelphia-based Temple University School of
Medicine, and as an affiliate of Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine,
Clarion University, Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and Pennsylvania State
University, West Penn Hospital provides distinguished undergraduate and graduate
medical and health sciences education programs. The Family Medicine residents at
West Penn work side by side as integral members of every team with which they
rotate and as active teachers of their students and colleagues. Should you choose
to do your residency with us, you can be assured that you will greatly benefit
from this flourishing academic environment.
